How to Choose Your Chaniya Choli Size: Upper Bust, Skirt Length and Flare Explained
Every chaniya choli in our collection is a single piece in a single size — so getting the size right the first time matters more than it does with a saree or a kurti. The good news: every product page now lists the exact measurements of that piece, choli, skirt and dupatta. This guide explains what those numbers mean and how to pick.
Start with your upper bust, not your usual size
Indian blouse and choli sizing is keyed to the upper bust — measured around your chest just under the armpits, above the fullest part. That's the number the size label refers to. A "size 38" choli is cut for a 38-inch upper bust.
Take three measurements with a soft tape, standing relaxed, over a regular bra:
- Upper bust — under the arms, across the top of the chest. This picks your size.
- Full bust — around the fullest part. Should be no more than an inch over the choli's stated bust.
- Waist — at the natural waist, where you'd tie the skirt.
If your upper bust falls between two sizes, go up. Every choli has roughly an inch of margin in the side seams for a tailor to take in; letting out is much harder.
Skirt length is the number most people forget
The skirt length on each listing is measured from the waist to the hem. Our chaniyas run 41 to 46 inches depending on the style — that's a five-inch spread, enough to be the difference between ankle-length and mid-calf.
A quick way to check: measure from your natural waist to the floor, then subtract about an inch for the heel height you'll wear. Garba is danced in flats or juttis, so most women want the hem to sit just above the ankle — long enough to flare beautifully when you spin, short enough not to be stepped on.
- 5'0" – 5'3" — 41 to 42 inches sits right at the ankle.
- 5'4" – 5'7" — 44 to 45 inches.
- 5'8" and above — 45 to 46 inches, and expect a slightly higher hem.
The skirts have a drawstring or elastic waist, so the waist measurement is forgiving — length is not.
What "flare" means, and why it's the fun number
Flare is the total circumference of the skirt at the hem. It decides how dramatically the skirt opens when you spin — the whole point of a garba outfit. Ours range from 90 inches to 204 inches:
- 90–108 inches — a moderate, easy-to-wear flare. Lighter to dance in for a long night and easier to pack.
- 166–168 inches — a proper full circle. This is the one that photographs well mid-twirl.
- 204 inches — maximum drama, with the weight to match.

The choli that comes with each set is cut for the size on the label, typically with a 17-inch top length and a short sleeve. The exact numbers for the specific piece you're looking at are on its product page and in the size-chart image in the gallery.
Sizes we stock, and what to do if yours has gone
The collection runs 36, 38 and 40 on the choli, with most pieces in 38. Because each colour is a single piece, the size you want may exist in one colour only — the collection page shows live stock, and what's listed is what's on the shelf in Milpitas.
If your size is gone in a colour you love, two options that actually work: buy the next size up and have a tailor take in the choli side seams (about $15–20 locally, a few days), or pair a plain lehenga skirt with one of our Navratri mirror-work blouses, which are sold separately in 36, 38 and 40 and can be altered up to 42.
Five things worth checking before you order
- Is it stitched? Every set in our collection is fully stitched and ready to wear — no tailoring required before the first night.
- Dupatta size. Ours run 72–86 inches long. Longer ones drape over the head for aarti; shorter ones are easier to pin and dance in.
- Weight. Heavy Kutchi mirror work looks spectacular and weighs more. For three or four nights of dancing, a lighter Patola or Lehariya set is kinder.
- Alteration margin. About an inch in the choli side seams. Plan for it if you're between sizes.
- Time. Order early enough for an alteration if you need one — see our order-by dates by state.
